More ranting
Ok this is probably going to get me in a lot of trouble but here it goes anyway.
Womens rights people piss me off. I am all for women having the same rights as men. If they want to join the military, good let them. If they want equal rights, good let them. You know what though? If they want them they get the bad with the good. Women want equal rights, they get to sign up for the draft. You dont get the good and not the bad I am sorry. What has started me on this diatribe is that Wells University, an all female University, is thinking of going co-ed. That wouldnt start me on it. What started was that NPR had people talking about it saying how bad it is. Ok the Citadel was once all male., and what happened? Women wanted to join and then the Citadel was forced to allow them. Guys want to have something to themselves what happens? Women decide that they want in and they are allowed. Women however can have places like Wells and then numerious businesses, like Curves, that are all women. Ok I understand women not wanting to exercise in front of some guys. But as some of my male friends said they would like to not be watched by women when they are exercising. What would happen if guys tried to get a male only gym? Just a question for you guys...

I think both sides need to relize that we have a long way to go. yes its a hot issue. even today. So not to piss anyone off im not going to say anything else.
God Bless.
The Reverend things this is just a bunch of jibberish. If women want equal rights, then women SHOULD be made to sign up for the draft in order to get Federal financial aid.
I firmly believe that there should be segragations in certain things. I will definately get pissed if some law makes me have to allow women in my fraternity. They frickin have soroities for goodness sakes. There shouldn't be issues with an all female college like Midway(this is in KY for those that don't know) or an all male school like the Citadel.
What gets me is ladies nights.
I barely know where to start. I suppose the first thing I should point out is that it is not Wells University, it is Wells College hence privately funded and they can traditionally accept or reject whomever they want. This is the same reason black or handicapped golfers can't play in some tournaments.
A private college versus a military institution such as the Citadel... When it comes to the government, everyone should be included and yes that also means being fair and every person eligible for the draft.
It is a shame that people choose to segregate themselves and laws are usually much better about enforcing equal rights than people are. However I don't blame anyone for this either, especially when you are a member of a minority, but for everyone really. Until things do change and we all have true equal rights, there is a need to band together and focus on the needs of your own particular ethnic group, gender, etc.
Everyone forms there own groups and no this does not exclude men in the least. Fraternities, "Secret" Societies, Lodges, Country Clubs can all cater to the white male, or males, or whites in general. And yes there is the male equivalent of Curves, it is called Cuts Fitness for Men.
As far as the college/university co-ed dispute goes, this is a hot topic for women, more so than for men because of the historical society values and expectations on men and women. In the past and still somewhat today, generally male schools were more successful than female schools. Males graduated, went to work, had male children that they sent to their alma mater, and gave money generously to their old school.
However in the past, fewer females went to colleges or universities and so there was lower enrollment. Those who did go, sometimes found jobs. Others got married and stayed at home. Those who got jobs were payed lower wages than their male counterparts. For these schools to suddenly become co-ed, switches the focus from women back to men and takes the limited resources and reputation the women have built up and forces them to share it with the men. In other words, it is a lot easier to share when there is a lot to go around.
This may be a fine line and granted ideally I believe every school would be co-ed and the gender differences would not be an issue, but I can certainly understand and condone this point of view.
I'd like to make one last and very long comment before I get off my soap box and it is for all the men who read these blogs, you know who you are. Ben made the comment that Womens rights people piss him off. I'd like to try and persuade all of you to look upon "Women's rights activists" with a different perspective.
Proponents of the women's movement are often seen as bra-burning lesbians who want to rule over men. I am not saying this species of woman is extinct, but I think that you will find that most women who will call themselves feminists are not this way. Most feminists do not hate men and do not want any more rights or priveleges than what men have.
As a matter of fact, most of these women and I include myself whole-heartedly (as if you couldn't tell), if angry at anyone, are angry at other women. Women place themselves in these roles and at a disadvantage compared to men, and men for the most part simply accomodate what women want whatever that may be.
I don't see how you men do it. In a dating situation for example,... some women will get pissy if you don't buy them dinner, take their coat, hold the door, pull out their chair, etc. Other women will bite your head off if you even suggest these. Best advise I can give is to just continue to be accomodating, listen, and try not to form stereotypes or cruel feelings towards women or particular groups of women.
Thanks for reading, post more comments, I enjoy ranting.
I agree, women, in general, are inconsistent (Joking: meant to be funny).
Actual feelings on the matter:
I'm sure most women's activists are decent people, who just want to be treated fairly. However, the sad truth is that the "bra-burning lesbian" is going to get focused on because she is the extreme. Just exactly the same way as the "wife-beating-drunk" is the white male stereotype. If it were up to me, everyone would just get along. But, thanks to the "bra-burning-lesbians" and "wife-beating-drunks" that is very unlikely.
Stats:
Cuts: 150 Locations in 22 states 2 foreign countries
Curves: All 50 states and 23 foreign countries
Not trying to start or perpetuate an argument. Just stating that Women's Only facilities are more prevalent than Male Only facilities.
To Mooley...
I like the points you've made and I agree. One more thing I want to say about the Cuts/Curves thing. Cuts is definitely not as successful as Curves. This is not however caused by the companies themselves or by any direct influence of society, it is due to lack of customer response.
I feel that women are influenced by society more so than men to feel displeased with their appearance and more emphasis is placed improving this. I also feel that more pressure is placed on men to behave in a masculine way. For example it is considered completely acceptable and is common for women to spread the word and rave about the new fitness place they are going to. You know as well as I that questions about sexuality/masculinity are raised if a man spreads the word about an all male gym.
